The Technosapiens Project
A Message from Nigel M. de S. Cameron
After a generation of breathtaking developments in biotechnology, we are now on the leading edge of something with at least as great a potential for good and for ill: the group of technologies focused in nanoscale research and, in tandem, cybernetics. Nano is much newer than cybernetics, and is being funded ona huge scale - over $8 billion in research worldwide, including around $1 billion of US taxpayers' money. Yet most people have never even heard of it. Congress wisely required that funding include studies of ethical, legal and social issues raised by the technology, though so far little has been done to focus the key questions.
The goal of the Techno sapiens process is to bring together prominent stakeholders in this debate - from the left and the right, from those who are strongly pro-tech, some of whom would welcome the prospect of a "post-human" future, to critics who want to ensure that human integrity is safeguarded and the good retain center-stage. We believe that it is by having this conversation, and having it in public, that we shall best encourage understanding of the potential significance of these technologies, and ensure the primacy of human dignity in their development."
